What are the new publishing options in Editorial Manager?
Last updated on October 14, 2025
Based on the institution and funder details you provide during submission; we offer tailored publishing options and a personalized article publishing charge for Gold open access when applicable.
Hint: start your institution search using your main institution name (e.g. University of Manchester) as this will return the most results from which to select the most appropriate option. If you're unable to find your specific department, then selecting your main institution is sufficient.
The benefits of showing the publishing options to authors during the submission process include:
- Provides authors an end-to-end transparent open access pricing policy.
- Authors will know from submission onward about the open access fee that they need to pay when the article is accepted for publication and go through the forms in online author communication system (OACS).
NOTE: If you are submitting to a hybrid journal, you are only indicating a preference at this point so any choice you make pre-acceptance can be changed once your article is accepted.
Follow these steps to resolve the issues with your scrollbar:
- Zoom out or change the size of the window so that the full screen is visible:
- You will now be able to use the scroll option effectively.
- Alternatively, you can also upgrade your browser to the latest version of IE or use a supported browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
During Revision, if any author information requires updating, the Publishing Options can be updated too.
If your article is accepted, you will receive an email with a link to the “Rights and Access form” where you will have one last chance to check and confirm or change the publishing option you selected at submission in Editorial Manager.
Note: If you change the original Publishing options after acceptance, you will be requested to insert all required information. This is to tailor to your applicable options.
If you have not yet submitted the manuscript via Editorial Manager, but you have selected your publishing option, and you want to change an author institution or a funder then please follow the below instructions to ensure you are presented with the most up-to-date publishing options:
- Return to the Manuscript Data step.
- Make the required change to author institute or a funder
- Click 'Build PDF for Approval' to proceed to the Elsevier Publishing Options page
- Click 'Publishing Options' to generate your Publishing Options again where you can re-select and save your preference
NOTE: If no changes are made to the author institutions or the funders then it is not possible to re-select your publishing options (even if you have not yet submitted your manuscript) at this stage. When you click on the Publishing Options, you will see the read-only version of your previous selection. You will be able to change your Publishing Option selection if the manuscript comes back to you for revision.
If you are submitting to a hybrid journal, you are only indicating a preference at this point so any choice you make pre-acceptance can be changed once your article is accepted.
Accessibility Statement for Publishing Options
At Elsevier, we are committed to providing an accessible online experience for all users. We strive to make our platform perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust, in accordance with WCAG 2.1 standards. We recognize the importance of accessibility and are continuously working to improve the usability of all our services.
Measures to Support Accessibility
We have implemented a range of measures across the Publishing Options service to promote accessibility and ensure a more inclusive experience for all users. Below are the specific efforts for the service:
- Providing text alternatives for non-text content and ensuring sufficient color contrast.
- Enabling comprehensive keyboard navigation across all pages and interactive elements.
- Implementing skip links to help users bypass repetitive content and navigate efficiently.
- Ensuring content is responsive and supports reflow when zoomed up to 400%, with ongoing efforts to improve full responsiveness.
- Maintaining clear and consistent headings, labels, and navigation across the platform.
- Regularly reviewing and updating accessibility features to address identified gaps.
- Recognizing areas with partial or unsupported accessibility features, such as semantic structuring and focus indicators, and actively working to improve these aspects.
The Publishing Options service is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 AA level of conformance, aiming to provide equal access to all users. Most accessibility criteria, including color contrast, keyboard navigation, and consistent page structure, are fully supported. Certain areas, such as semantic structuring of content, focus indicators, and complete labelling of all form inputs, are currently supported partially or are not fully compliant. We are actively working to address these gaps through ongoing development and updates to enhance overall accessibility. Our commitment is to continually improve our platform to achieve full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance and provide an inclusive user experience.
