Last updated on August 05, 2025Watch this short video to see the steps.
This guide will help you to complete a review form within Editorial Manager For more general information on how to review a submission see Elsevier's How to Review pages.
Reviewers are asked to complete a journal-defined form on Editorial Manager. This will always include selecting a recommendation term, and entering comments to the author and to the editors. It may also include structured questions, numerical ratings, and/or the opportunity to upload files.

How?
Follow these steps to submit your review in Editorial Manager:
If you will be submitting a file as part of your review, check that you have no personal information in the file that would identify you to the author.
Not every journal allows reviewers to upload file attachments.
Journals may allow or request you to upload files as a part of your review. For example, a copy of the submission PDF with your comments inserted, a form you are asked to download and complete, etc. You may also want to format your comments more than the plain text field in the Review form allows, in that case you could prepare your comment in MS Word or another application.
- Do not password protect the file. This will block any efforts to anonymize the file.
- Include the manuscript number, revision number, and your reviewer number in the filename if possible.
- For example, "reviewer 3 comments for author on JRNL-1234 R2.docx"
- You can find your Reviewer Number in your Pending Assignments folder .
- If the file is meant only for editors, make that clear in your comments to editor as well as the filename. Editors may otherwise assume that all files should be shared with the author.
- Editorial Manager can remove some file properties to protect your identity:
- Personal details from file properties if the file is MS Word or PDF.
- Personal details from the metadata on comments and tracked changes in an MS Word or PDF file.
- Editorial cannot remove personal details from any other file types.
- Editorial Manager will never automatically remove or edit any content of the files, such as if you entered your name in text.
Log in to Editorial Manager for the journal to which you want to submit your review.
- Be sure to log using the same email address as the invitation.
- If you have any trouble locating your review assignment, see How do I find a submission I was invited to review in Editorial Manager?.
You may have received a direct 'Submit Review' link in an email after agreeing to review, or in a reminder email, this will take you straight to Step 5 below.
- From your main menu, click 'Pending Assignments' for your assigned paper to appear.
- Click 'Submit Recommendation' .
- Any journal-specific 'Reviewer Instructions' are at the top of the review form and may include a link to another web page.
- Choose your recommendation term from the drop-down menu, each journal defines their own custom list of reviewer recommendation terms.
- If enabled, enter your overall manuscript rating. Unless otherwise instructed, assume 0 is the worst rating, and 100 the best.
- Answer any Review Questions. These are customized per journal and can be of different types such as numerical ratings, multiple choice, text response, etc.
- Fill in your Comments to Author.
- Comments must be entered in plain text; there is a Special Character link available for each field.
- Your Comments to Author will usually be merged into a list of comments in the author decision letter.
- Mention any files you will attach. For example, you could add 'please see my file named xxx" in the author comments.
- Fill in any Confidential Comments to the Editors.
If you have a file to submit, click 'Upload Reviewer Attachments'.
