Reference manager applications are commonly used by authors to prepare the references in their submission; they may leave codes in the manuscript file that interfere with the PDF builder.


How do I remove reference manager field codes?

Such statements are required by most journals from each listed author, and many journals have a form to be completed or a specific format to follow. Check the journal's Guide for Authors before beginning submission.


What are Conflict of Interest Statements, Funding Source Declarations, Author Agreements/Declarations and Permission Notes?

The co-authors are contacted and asked to confirm their contribution to the submission, and will be requested to register for the journal during this process.

Journal specific submission requirements can be found in the journal's guide for authors. For accepted articles, Elsevier will apply the journal style as long as the author has provided complete and correct details for each reference.


How should I prepare the references in my manuscript?

In order to hide author identity from reviewers in double-anonymized review, authors must remove all identifying details from the manuscript file, and place them in a separate file that will not be shared with reviewers.


What are the requirements for double-anonymized peer review?

After you have completed the submission steps and built the PDF, select 'New/Revised Submissions Waiting for Author Approval'. Select 'View Submission' to check the PDF, then 'Approve Submission' to send your submission to the journal.


How can I approve my submission?

Your submissions to the journal appear on your Author Main Menu, grouped in folders based on the current status.


How can I find the manuscript I submitted for an Elsevier journal?

If enabled for the journal, look for the submission step Review Preferences. You will usually be asked to provide the full name, email address, and country of each suggested reviewer.


How can I suggest or oppose reviewers for my submission?

In a Direct to Editor workflow the 'New Direct to Editor Submissions' folder allows the Receiving Editor to decide whether to handle the submission, redirect to another editor, or send it back to the author.


How do I handle new Direct to Editor assignments in Editorial Manager?

For outstanding revisions, authors can select 'Decline to revise' in order to withdraw a submission. Otherwise the author must contact the journal directly to withdraw the submission prior to decision.

How can I withdraw my manuscript in Editorial Manager?

If you have permission, the 'Unassign editor' link on a submission allows you to replace an editor and/or remove an editor from the submission.


How can I unassign or reassign Editors in Editorial Manager?

Is there a template available for my manuscript file?

Highlights are a short collection of three to five bullet points that provide a quick textual overview of the article. Many journals request articles to upload Highlights as a separate file during submission.

How do I include Highlights with my manuscript?

After submission, Authors can only make changes when the submission is sent back to them, or when the editors make a revise decision. Authors can select 'Send Email' to contact the journal about urgent changes at other times.
