How should I cite my article?
Last updated on February 08, 2023To cite your article you'll need to:
- Have your manuscript accepted for publication and available on ScienceDirect.
- Know the unique 'Digital Object Identifier' (DOI) of your article. After your article has been accepted for publication, you will receive a notification email with a link to track the status of your paper which includes the DOI information. Alternatively you can find the DOI on the top left corner of your article once it's on ScienceDirect.
- Consult your journal's Guide for Authors to check if your journal has any journal specific citation rules. You can find your journal's Guide for Authors on the journal homepage. To go to your journal's homepage, search for the journal using the search box under 'Find by journal title' in the journal authors page.
To share your published article, see Sharing and promoting your article.
How
You should cite your article by including the author(s), year and article title information in the format of the journal reference style (Guide for Authors) and also include the full DOI.
General principles for citing articles with an article number:
- Regardless of reference style, always include the article number where the page number (or page range) would otherwise go.
- Never cite the internal page numbering starting at ‘1’.
- Include the DOI if known.
Examples:
- If the article is not final (e.g., a journal pre-proof):
- A.U. Thor, Title of article, Favorite Journal (2020), https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/doi-suffix, or
- A.U. Thor, Title of article, Favorite Journal, https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/doi-suffix.
- If volume/issue/pages are known:
- A.U. Thor, Title of article, Favourite Journal 5 (1) (2020) 37-65, https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/doi-suffix.
- If volume/issue/article number is known:
- A.U. Thor, Title of article, Favourite Journal 5 (1) (2020) 101357, https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/doi-suffix.
