How can I retrieve my existing password from my browser?
Last updated on September 11, 2023If you've switched on the password managing function in your browser then your details should automatically appear when you visit the site again. There are reasons why this might not happen though, for example if you've switched browsers, cleared out your cookies, logged in from a different page or left it a couple of years between logins. If the code has changed on the site you're logging in to this might prevent your credentials being auto-filled too.
If this happens and you've forgotten your password, but have previously switched on the password managing function in your browser, it may be possible to retrieve the password from your browser's cache of stored login details. Click on the browser you are using below to find out how.
How
- In Google Chrome, open 'Settings'.
- In the section 'Autofill and passwords', locate 'Passwords' column after you click 'Google Password Manager' option.
- If there are a lot of entries here, use the search box to look for part of a URL.
- You can then click on 'Show' to see the password corresponding to that website. Chrome will prompt you for the username associated with your Windows or Mac account before showing the password.
- In Firefox select 'Options', then 'Security'.
- Click 'Saved Logins' to bring up the list. You can search for entries or simply scroll down the list.
- Click 'Show Passwords' to reveal your login information.
- Open Control Panel, then search for 'Credential Manager'.
- Click 'Manage Web Credentials' when the results appear on screen.
- Expand the entry of the site you want to look at and click 'Show' next to the starred out password. You'll be prompted for your Windows user account password, and then the password will be displayed on screen.
- From the Safari menu select 'Preferences' and open the 'Passwords' tab.
- You can scroll down through the entries in the list or use the search box to find something specific.
- Tick the box marked 'Show passwords for selected websites', enter your Mac OS user account password, and the details for the currently selected site appear on screen.
