When and why does Elsevier partially complete the Rights and Access form for authors?
Last updated on December 12, 2025
When a manuscript is accepted for publication, Elsevier asks the corresponding author to complete our Rights and Access form. This ensures we have the correct details and publish the article in the way the authors want.
After 14 days, if the corresponding author has failed to complete the form and provide these details, we will publish the article using details provided at submission. Where it applies, this includes billing details which we will use for processing the Article Publishing Charge (APC) invoice.
We will inform the corresponding author by email when this happens, and provide a shortened version of the Rights and Access form so they can still:
- Choose their preferred open access user license, if different to the default license we will apply.
- Tell us their copyright status. We will proceed on the understanding that the author is entitled to grant rights in the article.
- Agree to the terms of the publishing agreement. This covers the transfer of rights and confirms compliance with required policies.
