How can I use ORCID for single sign-on to Editorial Manager?
Last updated on August 05, 2025Watch this short video on ORCID single sign on.
Journals can allow users the option to sign in to Editorial Manager (EM) via the ORCID website, using their ORCID username and password instead of an EM username and password.
When enabled, this feature displays as an ORCID icon on the journal's login page. See screenshot.
Single sign-on via ORCID provides efficient access for the user. If the user remains signed in to the ORCID website, they can access multiple EM sites during that session and not have to enter login identification information again; assuming the feature is enabled on the other EM sites.
For new users not yet registered on the journal, the user may be able to use ORCID during the registration process to populate personal information, depending on their ORCID privacy settings.

How
Click the icon , under the EM login buttons, to launch the ORCID site in a new window See screenshot.
- If you are logged in to ORCID already, and you have previously linked this EM site to your ORCID identifier and authorized ORCID to send the identifier to EM, the ORCID screen will close after a few seconds. You will be logged into EM and taken to your default Main Menu.
- Otherwise:
- If you are not already logged into ORCID, you will be prompted to enter your credentials.
- If you have not previously authorized ORCID to share your ORCID identifier with EM, a confirmation screen will appear, asking you to authorize ORCID to pass information to EM. Only your ORCID identifier is passed back, not any other details.
- If you have previously authenticated this ORCID identifier for the journal, you will be immediately signed into the journal and proceed to your default Main Menu.
- Otherwise, after you authorize ORCID to send your identifier to EM, you will be returned to EM login:
- If you had not previously authenticated your ORCID identifier, you will be prompted to login with your EM username and password. By doing so you will authenticate your ORCID identifier with your existing account, and in the future will be able to login to EM via ORCID credentials, without the EM username and password.
- If you have no registered account, you can instead use the "click here to register" link at the bottom of the screen. By completing this process, you will register an EM account and link to your ORCID identifier, and in the future you will be able to log in to EM via your ORCID credentials. See How do I register an account on Editorial Manager?
If you begin to register a new EM account via your ORCID identifier, and that identifier has previously been authenticated to an EM account, you will be offered a chance to switch to your existing account rather than creating a duplicate account.
After authorizing ORCID sign on for the journal, each time you log in to the journal you can click the ORCID icon .
- If you were already logged into ORCID, after a few seconds the ORCID window will close and EM will open on your default menu.
- If you were not logged into ORCID before clicking, an ORCID login window will appear. As soon as you have logged in, the ORCID window will close and EM will open on your default menu.
The user's ORCID password is never exposed to EM. The user is asked to sign in to ORCID and authorize the login, and then the ORCID site provides EM with the ORCID identifier to use via a secure channel. No other information is sent from ORCID to EM.
- In EM, you can click "Update My Information" in the top menu, and remove your ORCID identifier from the EM account. See How do I link or unlink my ORCID to my profile?
- On the ORCID site, you can go to Account settings, and check the list of Trusted Organizations to remove 'Elsevier Editorial' from the list. This only resets the authorization, it does not remove the ORCID identifier from EM.
