When can I expect a decision from the Editor?
Last updated on May 20, 2025The general publication process differs between journals. For most journals you can consult the actual editorial and production time on the Journal Homepage.
Not all journals have Journal Insights and associated data live yet.
How
Watch this short video to see how to locate and explore the Journal Insights section of the journal homepage.
Follow these steps to consult your journal's 'Journal Insights' page:
- If you are on the EM site, click 'Journal Overview' in the top navigation bar to go directly to the journal's home page.
- If you are not on EM, go to your journal homepage by searching for the journal's title in the ‘Find a journal’ section on the journal author's page and clicking on the journal name.
- Scroll down to and look for the journal metrics displayed after the Aims and Scope. See the screenshot for an example.
- Click the 'Review Time' link to see to see the average number of weeks it takes for a manuscript to reach first and final decision over the last several years.
- If the metrics do not appear, then the journal is not yet participating in the Journal Insights program.
- To view more information about the journal, such as publication speed for accepted articles, click the link at View historical data and other metrics on Journal Insights. This appears only if the Journal Insights page is live for the journal.
If you are waiting considerably longer to receive a decision from the Editor than the average review speed indicates, you can contact the Editor. To contact the Editor, you must be the Corresponding Author. See How do I send an email about my submission?
