What is a society membership discount?
Last updated on December 15, 2025
Society-owned open access and hybrid journals offer discounts to their members on the Article Publishing Charges (APC). The author receives a society membership discount once their membership is validated.
Enter your society membership details (e.g. member number or email address) when you complete the Rights and Access form, after your article is accepted for publication. The validity of your membership will be checked by the society and you will be provided a discount upon successful validation.
Society journals which have an agreement in place, offer membership discounts to its members. Refer to the Journal Home Page for more information.
Please contact the society directly if your request for membership discount was rejected, as the society is the ultimate decision-maker about membership.
If your request is declined, you will have 7 days to challenge the decision with the society. If the original decision of the society is upheld, you will have to pay the full Article Publishing Charge.
No, you can enter the society membership details only while completing the Rights and Access form, post acceptance. At submission, we will ask if you are a member of the society. If you answer "yes" we will show you the discounted price that you'll pay after acceptance and if you're eligible.
Based on the agreement with the society, either the corresponding author or any of the co-authors is eligible for the membership discount.
Contact the society directly to sign up for membership. If you are submitting your paper to a society journal offering a discount, you will have the option to become a member during the submission process in Editorial Manager.
The validation process is triggered once the society membership details are entered post-acceptance in the Rights and Access form. You will receive an invoice with the society membership discount when the society has validated your membership within 24-48 hours.
- Fully open access journals: You will have 14 days to complete the Rights and Access form. If you don’t start or don’t complete the form, we will not be able to match you to a membership discount and you will be sent an invoice for the full APC.
- Hybrid journals: If you don’t complete the Rights and Access form within 5 days, the article will be published under subscription by default and therefore you will not have to pay the APC.
