How do I use the 'Solicit Commentary' function to invite an author to respond to another submission?

Last updated on June 11, 2025

In Editorial Manager (EM), an Editor with appropriate permissions may invite an Author to submit a commentary on a previously submitted article. One common use for this is to invite a response or 'Letter to the Editor'.

The commentary is linked with the first article in the system, making it easy to track the relationship between the two and, if desired, schedule them for publication together. The existing submission (also known as the "parent" submission) may be anywhere in the editorial/review process at the time a commentary (also known as the "child" submission) is solicited.

The invited author is able to view the Reviewer PDF of the Parent Submission.

Authors may also be invited to submit without a specific Parent article using a function called Initiate Proposal. See How do I invite authors to submit in Editorial Manager?
