How can an Editor be blocked from seeing a certain submission?
Last updated on August 28, 2024Watch this short video to see how to block editors.
Editors with appropriate permissions can block (“Blind”) an Editor from seeing a certain submission in order to prevent a potential conflict of interest, for example when the submission has been authored or co-authored by that Editor, or the Editor was involved in the research.
How?
The link to Block (Blind) Editors is found on the Assign Editor page and the Details page. If you do not see the link: contact your Journal Manager or other Support Contact. It may be that your role does not have permissions, or it may be that the link has been hidden on the details page.
- Suppresses the Submission from all Editor Menu folders displayed for that Editor.
- Suppresses the Submission from appearing in 'Search All Manuscripts' results, and from the Simple Submission Search tool in the top navigation bae.
- Suppresses the Submission from being listed on any person's 'Activity Details' page when viewed by the blocked Editor.
- Suppresses the Submission from being listed on any Reports that have 'Send Reminders' functionality such as: Author Reports (Author Revision Status, Author Revision Reminder); Reviewer Reports (Reviewers Invited – No Response, Reviewer Reminder); Editor Reports (New Assignments, Required Reviews Complete Report).
- If the Blocked Editor has created any Automated Reminder Reports, the Submission will not receive reminders based on those reports.
- The Blocked editor is never available for Editor Assignment on the Submission.
After initiating the 'Assign Editor' action, you may realize that one or more editors should be blocked from seeing this submission.
- Editor names are flagged if similar to one of the authors.
- If the corresponding author is an editor , they are flagged and have no 'Select' option.
- Any previously blocked editors are flagged , and have no 'Select' option.
The 'Blind Editors' link appears at the top, above the list of editors. If the link does not appear, then you do not have permission.
Though the Corresponding Author can never be assigned as an Editor of their own submission, they are not automatically blocked.
The details screen can be customized by each journal to have the fields in different orders, but normally the Blinded Editors row will be somewhere near the other editor information.
- When no editors have yet been blinded , the Details page will show only a link to the Blinded Editors popup window.
- When one or more editors are already blinded , their names and roles appear before the link to the popup.
If you have trouble locating the option, try using CTRL-F to search for the word 'Blind' Id the row is missing from Details, then the journal has hidden it entirely for your role. If the row is shown, but there is no link, then you do not have permission.
See this screenshot for an example of the Blind Editor popup screen.
- From either the Assign Editors or the Details screen, clicking the ‘Blind Editor’ link delivers the Editor to a list of all Editors in the journal.
- Any editor assigned to the submission will not have a tickbox. It is not possible to block an editor who is already assigned.
- Tick the checkbox next to each name to be blocked.
- Untick the checkbox to stop blocking an editor.
- Click 'Submit' to save changes.
