Can the due date of my review be changed?

Last updated on October 31, 2024

To request an extension of the due date of your review you are required to contact the Editor of your journal.

In order to request an extension you must:

  • Have Agreed to a review invitation.
  • Not have completed the review.
  • Not have been uninvited by the Editor.
  • The Editor has not made a decision on the submission.

How

Follow these steps to contact the Editorial team about your review task:

  1. Log in to the journal in which you agreed to review.
  2. Locate the manuscript in your Reviewer main menu under 'Pending Assignments' .
  3. Check the current due date and if you still need to request an extension, click 'Send E-mail' under the 'Action' column. See screenshot .
    • If the links are collapsed, click ‘Action Links’ to expand the list.
  4. Select the most relevant template from the drop-down menu and click Customize Letter as in this screenshot .
    • Some journals may have only one template, which will open immediately.
  5. Write an email to the Editorial team in which you request to extend the due date of your review. In this email, please include:
    • How much longer you think you need to finish your review.
    • Reason(s) for requesting extension.
    • Your suggestion for a new due date for the Editor to consider.
    • The letter template will include identifying information, please keep those details unchanged to help the Editorial team find the relevant submission.
  6. Click 'Preview and Send' to view your email.
  7. Click 'Send E-mail' to send your extension request.

There are a few journals for which the Send E-mail function is not currently activated. If this is the case for you, please contact us using the contact option at the foot of this page with your request (including the information listed above as well as the journal title and your manuscript details) and we will ensure it reaches the Editor on your behalf.

After these steps are completed:

  • The Editorial Team will consider your request and respond to you via email.
  • The email you have sent is visible in the correspondence history of the submission.
  • If the Editorial team does change your due date, the new date will be shown in your Pending Assignments folder.
  • If the Editorial Team does not respond within a few days, please contact us via the contact channel at the bottom of this page.
