What is the difference between PDF, ePub, and VitalSource files?
Last updated on May 30, 2025Deciding between a PDF, VitalSource, and an ePub formatted eBook? The key question is the size of the screen of the device you are using.
Device type | Recommended file |
---|---|
Large screens - e.g. Tablets and computer screens | PDF, VitalSource, or ePub |
Smaller screens - e.g. Smartphones | ePub |
Explanation
When it comes to small screens, the ePub’s ability to adjust to the size of the device and change font size is useful. Similarly it also displays well on larger screens, making it a good all-round file type.
PDF and VitalSource files show the audience the book as it would be in print. It is stable, static and consistent in format. They are good for complex design (charts, tables, illustrations, high-quality photos), and is most suitable for printing or viewing on larger screens.
Please note: PDF, VitalSource and ePub eBooks can only be opened in Adobe Digital Editions or Adobe DRM-compatible software (e.g Bluefire Reader for Apple and Android devices).
