How can I search in Reaxys?
Last updated on February 27, 2023
There are three search options available within Reaxys:
- Search with the ‘Quick search’ option.
- Use the ‘Query builder’.
- Browse through your saved searches and recent searches.
Quick tip: You can now change the number of results per page without logging in, through the drop-down at the bottom of the search results page.
How
Click on one of the below search options to find an overview of when and how you can use it.
With ‘Quick search’ you can search for substances, reactions and documents in Reaxys/Target and Bioactivity and all integrated databases like PubChem, LabNetwork and eMolecules and SigmaAldrich.
Follow these steps to search with Quick Search:
- On the Reaxys homepage, click the ‘Quick search’ field.
- You can now enter your search into the text field or create a structure or reaction drawing.
- For more information on how to use the Marvin JS structure editor, view our Structure Drawing Workflow.
- Click ‘Find’ to go through to the Results preview.
- Choose which results set you would like to view and click the corresponding ‘View Results’ button.
Please note: Reaxys will interpret text and structure input as a combined query. For example the input “melting point” as text and “aspirin” as structure will retrieve all melting points of aspirin. If the results are not what you expected, try using wildcard searches to modify your results.

The Query builder allows you to create specific and advanced searches for substances, substance data, reactions, reaction data, targets, targets data, bioactivities and documents and their bibliography.
Follow these steps to search with the Query builder:
- Go to the Reaxys homepage.
- Click the ‘Query builder’ tab.
- Find the desired search field in the list of available search fields (right-hand panel), either by scrolling through the list or using the search feature located on top of the panel.
- Drag the search field into the Query builder and further refine your search with Boolean and proximity operators.
- Repeat steps 3-4 until you have all search fields defined for your desired query.
- You may also drag in “quick querylets” (Structure, Molecular Formula, CAS RN and Doc Index).
- Using the ‘Structure’ querylet, you can search with drawings created in Marvin JS from ChemAxon to create combined structure / reaction and property queries. For more information on how to use the Marvin JS structure editor, view our Structure Drawing Workflow or our How to create a Structure Drawing in Reaxys Video Tutorial.
- After creating the drawing or structure, click ‘Transfer to Query’ and then ‘Search’.
- Ensure that the correct operators have been set for the combined searches if you have added multiple search fields. You can nest fields by dropping querylets on top of an already existing querylet.
- Click ‘Search’ on top of the screen and select the desired target context (substance, reactions, targets or documents).
- Reaxys will perform the search and present the most relevant results.

- Click the ‘History’ tab on the landing page.
- Select ‘Recent’ for current session searches or ‘Saved’ for your saved searches.
- Find the desired result set and click ‘View’ to see the results or hover over the search and click 'Edit Query' to edit the search in the Query builder
