What are Review Ratings in Editorial Manager?

Last updated on March 03, 2021

In Editorial Manager (EM) Editors are able to rate completed reviews on a 1-100 scale. In journals with this feature enabled, Editors can see a reviewer's past average rating while searching for reviewers. Review Ratings can be set as mandatory, meaning the Editor must enter a rating for every completed review while making a decision.

How can Editors see Review Ratings?

  • To see the average Review Ratings for Reviewer candidates while searching for reviewers, look at the Reviewer Statistics in the search results table. See Searching for reviewers for more details.
  • To see the details of a reviewer's past ratings, open the Activity Details page to find the Historical Reviewer Summary Statistics for the average, and the Completed Reviews list for the individual review ratings. The Activity Details page can be found in several ways:
    • In reviewer search results , click the reviewer name. See Searching for reviewers for more details.
    • In the Reviewer Selection Summary screen of any submissions, click any reviewer's name. See Viewing and managing pending reviewers.
    • In the Details screen of any submission, click any person's name.
    • In Search People results, click the person's name to open their profile. In the User Information section, click Activity Details.
  • To see the Review Ratings on a specific submission, click View Comments and Decisions from the action menu, or from the sidebar of the Reviewer Selection Summary. In the table of decisions and recommendations, every reviewer recommendation term is a link. Clicking that opens the full record of the review, including any rating. See Viewing completed reviews for more details.

How does an Editor enter a Review Rating?

If enabled, an Editor with permission can enter a Review Rating for any completed review. Ratings can be entered as soon as the review is completed, and may be mandatory to enter before the Editor is able to complete a decision. If another Editor has already entered a rating for a completed review, then any Editor with permission can view and override that rating.

Rating completed reviews during Editor Decision

The Editor Decision Form in EM is highly customizable for each journal and each Editor role, with sections that can hidden or displayed in different order. Editors can enter Review Ratings (as well as view and update previous ratings) in these sections:

  • Review Ratings section: when this section is displayed, simply fill in a rating from 1-100 for each reviewer, and continue to complete the Editor Decision Form.
    • Your ratings will be saved only when you save or submit the decision form.
    • If this section is not included on your Editor Decision Form and you would like it added, consult with your Journal Manager.
  • Completed reviews and decisions table: this table is displayed in all Editor Decision forms, but could be in different positions on the page.
    • Click any reviewer recommendation term to open the details of that review.
    • Enter a Review Rating number between 1 and 100, then click Save and Close.
    • Your change is saved even if you do not continue to complete and submit the decision.

That journals may include custom instructional text for rating reviews, consult with your Journal Manager if you would like to have text added to guide editors in rating reviews.

Rating completed reviews outside of the decision process

An editor may want to rate a review as soon as it is completed without waiting until it is time to make a decision. Alternatively an editor may need to update a review rating after the decision, either to add a missing rating or to change a rating.

  • Click View Comments and Decisions from the action menu, or from the sidebar of the Reviewer Selection Summary.
  • This pops up a table of all reviews and decisions for this submission. Any completed review is linked on the reviewer's recommendation term.
  • Click on a reviewer recommendation term to open the details of that review.
  • Enter a Review Rating number between 1 and 100, then click Save and Close.
  • See Viewing completed reviews for more details.

Some editors are restricted from making updates (including review ratings) after the decision is fully completed. If you need to update a review rating and the number is not editable, contact your journal's Editorial Office or Journal Manager.
