Article Tracking for Editors

Last updated on August 18, 2025

Article Tracking for Editors (ATfE) is a real-time production tracking service available to Editors of Elsevier journals. Editors can use ATfE to:

  • Check the production status of their journal's accepted manuscripts which have moved into Elsevier's production workflow
  • Search articles by status, title, author name, editor, editorial number, volume/issue
  • View bibliographic information for articles (once available)
  • Access links to the published version of articles on Science Direct
  • View the Scopus citation count for articles

for all in-progress and recently published articles. This includes all articles not yet finally published in an issue and articles published in issues finalized within the last year.

How do I access Article Tracking for Editors?

ATfE is only available to Editors of Elsevier journals. If you're an Elsevier Editor and you'd like to access ATfE for the journal(s) you work on it's a simple 2 step process to get started.

First create an account with the tracking service (if you've previously used OASIS for Editors then you may already have an account set up). Creating an account is a free and simple process.

Once you've created an account you'll be prompted to send us a request for the journals you'd like access to.

Simply complete the request access form and we'll validate your request and soon be in contact with the details you need to add the journal(s) to your account.

How will Article Tracking for Editors help me?

Once a journal has been added to your account, you'll have access to the:

Journal Summary page - this gives breakdowns of articles by:

  • publication status (where the articles are in the production workflow)
  • published online status
  • issue status

Tip: click on the number next to each status to be taken to a pre-filtered list of articles at that status. For definitions of the various statuses please click here.

Articles Overview page - this lists:

  • articles not yet compiled in an issue
  • articles compiled in an issue but the issue is not yet finalized
  • articles compiled in finalised issue, where the issue was completed less than a year ago

You can filter the articles by:

  • Article status
  • Accepting editor name
  • Elsevier's article type (what we call 'PIT' or Publication Item Type)
  • Volume & Issue

You can also run a free text search on:

  • Article title
  • Corresponding author name
  • First author name
  • Editorial reference number

For each article listed you can view a variety of information. See example below:

On the Articles overview page you can also choose to receive email notifications, alerting you to when the final version of an article has been published online. This can be done on a per article basis via the 'Email alert' checkbox or via the 'Subscribe to Email alert online publication' box for a batch of articles.

For further questions about the status of post-acceptance articles, please contact your Journal Manager.

Definition of statuses

Article statuses

Received for production: articles which have entered the production process and are currently being typeset, but have not yet been sent to the author for correction.

Awaiting proof corrections: articles sent to the author for correction, where corrections have not yet been received.

Author corrections returned: the author has returned their corrections and the corrected version of the article is being worked on.

Articles not compiled in issue: all articles not yet compiled in an issue, regardless of production status

Published online status

Accepted manuscripts published online: all articles where the latest published online stage is the accepted manuscript. Accepted manuscripts are articles that have been peer reviewed and accepted for publication by the Editorial Board. They have not yet been copy edited and/or formatted in the publication house style.

Uncorrected proofs published online: all articles where the latest published stage is the uncorrected proof. Uncorrected proofs are articles that have been copy edited and formatted, but have not been finalized yet. They still need to be proof-read and corrected by the author(s) and the text could still change before final publication.

Corrected proofs published online: all articles where the latest published stage is the corrected proof. Corrected proofs are articles that contain the author's corrections. Final citation details, e.g. volume and/or issue number, publication year and page numbers, still need to be added.

Final article published online: all articles where the latest published stage is the final version of the article. The final version of the article has full citation details, e.g. volume and/or issue number, publication year and page numbers.

Issue statuses

Compilation completed: issues where compilation has recently been completed, and the date the issue was compiled.

Planned Print publication: issues still in production but where we now have an expected despatch date.

Final publication: published issues and the date the issue was despatched.
