Last updated on February 16, 2023Watch this short video to see how to run this report.
The Journal Accountability report is the primary report in Editorial Manager (EM) for all journals wishing to assess the overall performance of the journal. For any timeframe, the report can provide Submission and Revision Statistics, Journal Turnaround Time, Reviewer Statistics, Decision Summary and Correspondence History.
- From the Editor main menu move down to the Administrative Functions heading at the bottom and select ‘Reports’. If this link is missing, then you have no permissions to run any reports.
- Under Summary and Annual Reports, select ‘Journal Accountability Report’ . If the option Is missing, then you do not have permission to run this specific report.
- Choose the dataset(s) that you wish to view. (Example: Decision Summary or Reviewer Statistics). By default, all will be included.
- Define the date range by selecting the radio button next to the desired date range – either a fixed range or customized dates.
- To customize your own date range, enter the starting date in the field next to Start Date (This is based on the date a manuscript is received in the journal) Note: the date must be entered in the mm/dd/yyyy format (i.e., August 5, 2012 would be represented as 08/05/2012) Alternatively, use the calendar icon to select the date.
- You may further refine your results by Article Type and/or Section set by choosing one or more values in the selection lists .
- If nothing in the list is selected, then no filter is applied for that parameter.
- On a PC, multiple values may be selected by holding down the 'Ctrl' key on your keyboard, while using the mouse to select the desired items in the selection box.
- On a Mac, hold down the 'Command' key while using the mouse to select the desired items.
- Select the ‘Submit’ button to view the results.
The Journal Accountability report is divided into several 'data set' sections, and you can choose which to include or exclude when running the report.
- Submission / Revision Statistics: consists of two tables
- Submission Statistics : gives the number of submissions and revisions received in the period, and the number submissions and revisions that went through some certain events during the period.
- Total Revisions Received : summarizes revisions received by the journal in the time period, or else revisions declined by the author during the time period. A single manuscript could be counted in two columns if there were two revisions both received within the specified time period.
- Journal Turnaround Times: shows the time from original submission to several milestones, for original submissions within the defined period.
- Reviewer statistics: is in three parts
- Reviewer Invitation statistics : gives overall counts of reviewers invited during the period, and the outcomes of those invitations.
- Reviewer Performance Averages : gives key turnaround times and other statistics, mostly for reviews completed in the specified time period unless otherwise indicated on the report.
- Reviewer Recommendation Summary : shows the number and frequency of each Reviewer Recommendation term submitted by reviewers in the specified time period.
- Decision Summary: is divided into several sections. In most cases the decision is considered made in the time period if the editor with final decision-making authority (either the earliest assigned, or else a later assigned editor who notified the author) made the decision within the time period.
- Accepted on submission : for journals with Early decision workflow enabled shows the number of times that the early decision option was used to accept a submission without review, for example for an editorial or other editor submitted material.
- Original Submission / Revision 1 / etc: includes a separate table for each revision number that had any decisions in the period. Those decisions are broken down by decision term and include the time from submission to decision.
- Summary of Correspondence History shows all the emails sent during the period, counted by the Letter Purpose (name) of each letter.
The report has no download link but can be saved or printed using standard browser commands or copied into another application.
- Submission Statistics: each row counts the submissions that had a certain event within the period of the report or were submitted in the period and are currently at a specific status. Submissions will be counted in multiple rows if they had those events in the time frame.
- Total Revisions Received: Includes revisions submitted by the author during the specified time period, no matter the original submission date, or the revision request date. If the same manuscript went through two rounds of revision in this timeframe, it will be counted twice in this table.
- Journal Turnaround Time: Includes new submissions received in the time period. Each value is the average of all eligible submissions that did reach that milestone.
- Reviewer Invitation Statistics: includes all reviewers invited during the time period, no matter when the next action happened. For example, 'Declined to Review':
- Includes reviewers invited during the period who have declined, even if they declined after the period
- Does not include reviewers invited earlier than the period who then declined during the period.
- Reviewer Performance Averages: Each row average times for reviews that were completed during that period, no matter when they were invited.
- Reviewer Recommendation summary counts the reviewer recommendation terms for all reviews completed during the period.
- Decision Summary: counts submission where the final editor in the decision chain (that is the first assigned, or the 'highest') made a decision during the time period. It does not include anything where one editor made a decision during the period, but the higher editor's decision was made later.
- Summary of Correspondence History: Counts all letters sent in the period, based on the letter's name.
