How can I set my Suggest Reviewer preferences in Editor Manager?
Last updated on June 18, 2025Watch this short video to see the steps.
Suggest Reviewer is a specialized reviewer search in Editorial Manager (EM) that searches by classification matches and availability. Each editor can set and save their own parameters for this search.
Set reviewers may be disabled for your editor role, especially in journals that do not use Classifications.
How?
- From the Invite Reviewers page, look in the links on the left side and select "My Suggest Reviewer Preferences ". If it does not appear, the option is disabled.
- Under Exclude the Following from the list , check the current settings and make any changes
- You can choose to automatically exclude those from the same institution and/or city.
- You can choose to exclude those with current or upcoming unavailable dates. Setting this to 0 will ignore unavailable dates entirely.
- You can choose to exclude those with a high number of pending (invited or agreed) reviews. Setting to 0 ignores the number of current reviews.
- You can set the minimum number of classification matches. Note that setting this to 0 will return your entire database.
- Under Sort the Candidate reviewers in order of importance by you can change the sort order:
- Enter a new number next to one or more of the criteria.
- The displayed order will not be updated until you use the Submit button to commit the changes.
- Use the Submit button at the bottom of the page to save your preferences, and return to the Invite Reviewers page.
On the Invite Reviewers page of any submission look at the Search Type options:
- Select 'Suggest Reviewers' from the Search Types section.
Then select a 'from' scope; default is Entire Database but you can limit it to all reviewers, or to one specific reviewer role.
- When ready, use the Search button.
- Matching records are listed as Reviewer Candidates at the bottom of the screen. Select the candidate(s) to Invite, Assign, set as Alternate, or Proposed. See sending reviewer invitations.
- Check the 'from' option in the search . You may have it set to a single reviewer role that does not have any matching reviewers. Try changing to Entire Database for the maximum results.
- Check your Suggest Reviewer Preferences
- Notice the exclusions and see if any should be changed.
- Notice the setting for pending reviews; for example if this is set to 1 then reviewers with even one open invitation will be excluded.
- Notice the number of Classification Matches you are looking for.
- There may not be any reviewer with that number of matches.
- If the number of required matches is higher than the number of classifications on that submission, you will find no results.
- Be aware of the minimum number of classifications required for users in your journal; if for example users are required to enter only 3 Classifications, then a search for a user with 5 matches may not find anyone.
After running Suggest Reviewer you can select options for each candidate in the results:
