Osmosis LMS Integrations

Osmosis offers two ways to connect with your Learning Management System (LMS). They serve different purposes, and your institution can use either one or both. Use the guide below to identify which integration fits your goal, then follow the linked setup instructions. An Osmosis subscription is required for both.

Which integration do I need?

• Want to place Osmosis videos directly inside a course or module? Use Osmosis LMS Embedding (LTI 1.1). Faculty search the Osmosis video library from within the LMS and embed videos into course content; students watch without a separate login.
• Want students to sign in to Osmosis through your LMS and link to specific Osmosis content? Use Osmosis LMS Access (LTI 1.3). Users authenticate into Osmosis.org through your LMS (single sign-on), and faculty can link directly to specific Osmosis Learn pages, playlists, and study schedules.

Osmosis LMS Embedding (LTI 1.1)

Osmosis LMS Embedding lets faculty search the Osmosis library of thousands of videos and embed them into LMS courses and modules. An Osmosis dialog opens inside your LMS so you can search for and place content, and students watch the videos from within the LMS. No additional login is required to view videos that were embedded through the LTI key.

Note: The Embedding integration functions as a video player only. It does not include Learn Page content such as Notes, Transcripts, or Assessments. To give students the full Learn Page experience, and to fully capture usage metrics, consider Osmosis LMS Access with deep linking (below).

Osmosis LMS Access (LTI 1.3)

Osmosis LMS Access connects your LMS to Osmosis using the LTI 1.3 standard. Once configured, users sign in through your LMS and are automatically authenticated into Osmosis.org. No separate Osmosis login is required. Faculty can also link directly to specific Osmosis Learn pages, playlists, and study schedules from within their courses (deep linking); students open that content through the same LMS-authenticated session.

Current capabilities and scope

Osmosis LMS Access currently focuses on authentication and content linking. Other than the student or faculty role used to grant the correct Osmosis license, no data is transferred between your LMS and Osmosis. Currently, there is no grade sync, cohort sync, or course-content mapping. We continue to expand LMS capabilities over time; this page reflects current functionality.

Security

Osmosis LMS Embedding follows the LTI v1.1 specification. Osmosis LMS Access uses the LTI 1.3 standard, with authentication handled through Elsevier’s secure gateway.

Frequently asked questions

Do students need separate Osmosis login credentials?

With Osmosis LMS Access (SSO), no. Students authenticate through your LMS, creating individual accounts, and are signed in automatically. First-time users accept a one-time Terms & Conditions notice on their first sign-in. With Embedding, no login is needed to watch videos that were authorized through the LTI key. An Osmosis subscription is required in all cases.

Does the LMS integration include Notes, Transcripts, Assessments, and Osmosis AI?

Embedding is a video player only — it does not include Learn Page content such as Notes, Transcripts, or Assessments. To give students the full Osmosis experience, use Osmosis LMS Access and link to Learn pages, playlists, or study schedules.

Do students' embedded-video views show up in Osmosis faculty analytics?

They can in specific instances. Embedding on its own is just a video player with no login, so views are not tracked by default. If your LMS is configured to pass the student's email address through the LTI tool, and that email matches an existing, individual Osmosis account, their watch activity is captured in Osmosis analytics. (Passing the email is not required for embedding to function; it is what enables activity to be attributed.) For fuller engagement data, use Osmosis LMS Access to enable the full product experience.

Does Osmosis LMS Access sync grades, rosters, or course content?

No. Other than the student or faculty role used to grant the correct Osmosis license, no data is transferred between your LMS and Osmosis — there is no grade sync, cohort/roster sync, or course-content mapping.

Which LMSs are supported, and will it work with our own LMS?

Supported platforms are Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace (D2L), and Moodle. Because both integrations use the LTI standard, they are largely LMS-agnostic and may work with other LTI-compliant systems, but compatibility should be tested for any platform not listed above.

If my school is set up with SSO and we link an Osmosis video URL from within our LMS, will students bypass having to sign in to watch the video?

Videos available under a paid subscription require login, unless the embed was authorized through an LTI key.

Can we use both integrations?

Yes. Embedding (LTI 1.1) and Access (LTI 1.3) are separate, independent capabilities and can be used together or on their own.
