What is Embase AI?
Last updated on July 11, 2025
Embase AI is a conversational search feature generative AI that quickly delivers answers to scientific questions while providing a fully traceable route to the reference data sources. Using the full corpus of Embase, Embase AI:
- Converts a natural language question into a working Embase query.
- Responses are backed by citations to the source of the information, coming from Embase.
- Synthesizes information from Embase into a tailored response.
- Allows multiple follow-up questions.
Note that Embase AI is only available as an add-on subscription. Contact your organization administrator for information about Embase AI subscriptions.
Also note that Embase AI is only available for registered users. You will need to sign in or create an Elsevier account by clicking on the ‘Sign in’ button on the top right corner of the page.
- From the Embase homepage, select the ‘Embase AI’ tab.
- Enter your query in the field.
- Decide whether you want to include preliminary research articles in your response (preprints, conference abstracts and clinicaltrials.gov content) by toggling on the button under the search bar.
- Press ‘Enter’ or select the ‘Ask’ Button.
When you run a query, Embase AI synthesizes abstracts from relevant documents to generate a response or will generate a list of references. From the response you can:
View the summary and references
- From the response, select a numbered citation to open a side panel showing the referenced document.
- You can interact with the document the same way you would do it in the Embase results page (show the abstract or index terms, link to publisher site or find similar records).
- Select ‘Show all references’ to show all the references in a side-panel.
Check the generated query
- Clicking on the grey box on top of the response allows you to check the generated Embase query. You will be also be able to:
- Send the query to the results page to see the whole set of results by clicking on the ‘Open in results page’ button.
- Copy the query in your device clipboard by clicking on the ‘Copy query’ button.
- You can interact with the document the same way you would do it in the Embase results page (show the abstract or index terms, link to publisher site or find similar records).
- Select ‘Show all references’ to show all the references in a side-panel.
- You can ask different follow-up questions by writing your question in the search form at the bottom of the page once the first question has been answered.
- You can always export your current chat by clicking on the button ‘Export’ positioned in the right-side panel. This will generate a txt file with your questions, the Embase queries, the summaries and the references used to create the responses.
