How long does it take published content to appear on Embase?
Last updated on January 30, 2024
In general, from a process perspective, content appears on Embase less than a week after we have received the content from publishers. This time includes the creation of bibliographic information in the needed format + the indexing with Emtree. More details about the indexing process can be found here: How is Embase indexed? - Embase Support Center (elsevier.com)
For the content which fits the criteria for manual indexing, this version is added less than 2 weeks later.
For the full time starting from the publication date, it’s important to differentiate the type and source of content, as well as its status on the publisher side. This can influence the time when it will appear on Embase.
There are different methods how we receive the content from the publisher which is different for each. When we have direct access, the timeline is shortened, and we can process it quickly after publication. However, for some publishers, they deliver it on a personal schedule which can sometimes cause the delay until we can process and display the content.
Medline unique articles are added to Embase only once they have been indexed with MeSH (and we map can map the index to Emtree). Often, when you first see the article on Pubmed, it is not indexed, and you can find it only with a free text search on the title and abstract. At that moment, it is not yet Medline. Only a few weeks later, once it gets MeSH index, it is officially part of Medline. Then, the article will also be visible on Embase (often on the same day).
The conference abstracts indexed for Embase are not coming from the conference websites. We process them as part of special journal issues. Hence, we must wait until the abstracts are published in the corresponding journal before we receive the content and can proceed with indexing.
