What is the Pubmed-not-Medline content that is contained in Embase?
Last updated on May 16, 2024
There are two types of PubMed-not-Medline content as explained in What part of Pubmed can I find on Embase?
Here we will only focus on the part that is Medline collection (but not Mesh indexed) which is only part contained in Embase.
Pubmed-not-MEDLINE records are records that were initially ‘early’ MEDLINE records (had the status ‘In Process’, ‘In Data Review’ in MEDLINE), but are not considered by MEDLINE for indexing. On MEDLINE they don’t have MeSH terms are assigned to them. These records, despite their labelled name (NIH definitions), are in fact part of the MEDLINE collection.
With the October 2018 release, Embase aimed to add early MEDLINE records but is also keeping the full records assigned as ‘Pubmed-not-MEDLINE’ status. Unlike on MEDLINE, on Embase these records will retain their Embase index from when they had an ‘In Process’ or ‘In Data Review’ status.
Embase has not added additional titles at this point.
In summary, Embase has the following types of content from the MEDLINE collection:
- Early MEDLINE records: ‘In Process’ or ‘In Data Review’.
- Full MEDLINE records:
- Records, indexed by MEDLINE only, where MeSH index terms are mapped to the relevant Emtree terms. This ensures they can be searched for correctly.
- MEDLINE records that overlap with Embase that are indexed according to Embase indexing guidelines with relevant Emtree terms.
- Pubmed-not-MEDLINE records: not indexed by MEDLINE but are part of the MEDLINE collection. This will be directly indexed with Emtree terms.
