How do I buy an article or chapter?
Last updated on March 18, 2025If you’re a personal user or if your organization activated the shopping cart, you can buy separate articles or book chapters on ScienceDirect and pay for them with your credit card. On this page we will tell you more about the purchasing process, and where to find the receipt.
Steps
- Sign in to ScienceDirect.
- Search for the article or chapter.
- Purchase:
- If not subscribed, select 'Purchase PDF'.
- Choose user type (academic/personal or corporate) and 'Add to cart'.
- Verify the title and 'Proceed to Checkout'.
- Enter billing and payment information, then 'Pay now'.
- Download your PDF(s) and any supplementary materials within 48 hours. Access purchased items under 'Purchased Articles' in the ScienceDirect top menu.

- You'll receive two emails: one for order confirmation (receipt) and one for access. Both emails contain a personal access link that is valid for 48 hours upon receipt of the first email.
- Access any supplementary materials from the ScienceDirect article page. These will not be included in the PDF. More information on how to open and view supplementary materials.
- Articles may take up to 30 minutes to appear in your order history. If you still don't have access after this time and didn't receive the confirmation email, contact our customer support through the contact options at the bottom of this page.
- ScienceDirect does not provide invoices for credit card purchases. The receipt you receive by email is a valid proof of payment, which you can use to be reimbursed or to reclaim your taxes. You can also find your receipt in your purchase history in ScienceDirect. View the steps on how to print or download your receipt.
To protect your personal data, some transactions such as online registration and accessing documents are accepted only through Transport Layer Security (TLS) security protocols. TLS is a security protocol which provides encryption over the Internet and is built into most commercially available browsers. Learn more about TLS in ScienceDirect.
- There is a limit of 20 downloads per 24 hours.
- Some publishers don’t allow individual article purchases for certain journals. View the list of journals to which this applies.
- ScienceDirect does not support credit card purchases from Ivory Coast, Lebanon, and Nigeria.
- At this time we are unable to deliver our products to Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. While we can still take orders, payment systems may not always be available. If you still urgently need access to one of our products, please contact our customer support team using the options at the bottom of this FAQ.
