How do I access my eBook?

Last updated on April 20, 2026

How you access your Elsevier eBook depends on the format you purchased. Elsevier eBooks are available either via the VitalSource Bookshelf® platform or as DRM-free downloadable files (PDF, EPUB, EPUB3).

Access via VitalSource Bookshelf®

For many titles, your eBook is accessed through VitalSource Bookshelf® (web, desktop, or mobile app).

How it works:

  1. Purchase your eBook on shop.elsevier.com
  2. Receive an access code via your order confirmation email (also available in My Account)
  3. Create or sign in to your VitalSource account
  4. Redeem your access code
  5. Open your eBook in Bookshelf

Key benefits:

  • Access on laptop, tablet, or mobile
  • Online and offline reading
  • Sync across devices (progress, bookmarks, notes)
  • Interactive tools such as highlighting, flashcards, and text-to-speech

Important notes:

  • This is not a downloadable file (PDF/EPUB)
  • Access is tied to your VitalSource account
  • Access is typically ongoing once redeemed
  • Access codes are single-use and linked to a specific edition

Download DRM-free eBooks (PDF, EPUB, EPUB3)

If you purchased a DRM-free eBook, you can download the file directly.

How to download:

  1. Log in to your shop.elsevier.com account
  2. Go to My Account → Order History
  3. Select your order and click More info
  4. Choose your preferred format
  5. Download the file

You can also access your download link via your order confirmation email.

Access duration

  • VitalSource eBooks: ongoing access once redeemed
  • DRM-free eBooks: download links active for 24 months

We recommend backing up downloaded files using cloud storage such as Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox.
