Funded Topics are the Topics which have Awarded Grant money linked to them.
Grants can be linked to Topics in two ways:
Linked Publications
For Grants with Linked Publications available, we use SciVal Topics of these publications, as the Grant funded research in these Topics. About 90% of Grants have within 10 Topics and the majority of those have within 5 Topics. Some large Grants have linked publications in more than 10, sometimes even more than 1000 Topics. For these Grants we pick top 10 Topics with the most linked publications in them.
Semantic linking
For Grants for which we don’t have linked publications available, we assign Topics using Simple Text Embedding Model (STEM) developed in-house. STEM is a Neural Network Classifier that leverages an advanced way of representing text to create tokens, reads 60 million articles on Scopus and learns which Topics they belong to.It uses this learning to create a semantic link between a Grant and Topics. We assign the Topics based on the optimal combination of precision and recall, not more than 10 Topics per Grant.
You can see which method was used in the Grant preview window, alongside the Topic(s) linked to the Grant.

Grants are often broader than granular SciVal Topics. A Grant can be linked up to 10 Topics.
Full Awarded Grants Value is assigned to each Topic it is linked to. The value is deduplicated on the Topic Cluster level.
