The SciVal Grants functionality was developed in collaboration with US universities to support strategic planning and execution of research strategies. It uses the Awarded Grants snapshot from 2010 to present for a selection of Funding bodies which our collaboration partners deemed important for strategic planning exercises.
SciVal Grants provides evidence using outside-in funding insights to support the following:
- Expansion and diversification of funding portfolio
- Forecasting future funding potential and areas of growth
- Identification of peer / competitor funding strategies and areas of focus
- Analysis of the link between scholarship and funding with insightful analyses and metrics
The two calculated Value metrics are Annualized Awarded Grants Value and Awarded Grants Value. The annualized value is the Awarded Grant value split evenly over its lifetime. For example, a five-year Awarded Grant of $100,000 has an Annualized Awarded Grants Value of $20,000. In contrast, Awarded Grants Value is volume of Grants awarded and available to be spent. The value is attributed to the start year of the Awarded Grant. For example, a five-year Grant of $100,000 has an Awarded Grants Value of $100,000.
The SciVal Grants subscription allows access to curated Awarded Grants data from more than 250 Funding bodies. Up-to-date coverage can be found via the “Funding Bodies covered” link at the top right corner on Grants pages.
From 2010 to present.
Various Grant types are assigned, based on the information available from the funding body. The following Grant types are used at the moment, including their descriptions:

Yes, Funding bodies are selectable entities in Grants. You can see which institutions and Topics have been funded by a Funding body.
The publications associated with Awarded Grants are identified in two ways:
- using the resulting publications reported per Awarded Grant by the Funding body
- using the acknowledgment data from Scopus of papers which mention the Grants that funded their research
Awarded Grants are assigned to Topics through Linked Publications and semantic linking.
No, Grants only captures the primary sponsor of the Grant. A Grant might be co-sponsored by other funding bodies but ultimately it is awarded by the primary sponsor.
Yes it can. Grants are assigned to Institutions by looking at the Scopus affiliation(s) of the award investigator(s) mentioned in the Grant, at the time of it being awarded. Institutions in SciVal are made up of multiple Scopus affiliations and the affiliation is then used to set the Institution.
Based on the available investigator and affiliation data a Grant can be assigned to multiple Institutions. Exact allocation of Awarded Grants Value to each Institution is used in case that data is available.
In case we don’t have detailed information about the allocation, the Awarded Grants Value is evenly distributed to each Institution. Example: if an Awarded Grant worth $3,000,000 is allocated to six Institutions, each Institution will show an Awarded Grants Value of $500,000
All values are expressed in US dollars (USD) and can be switched to British Pounds (GBP) in Settings. For past years we use the historical exchange rate provided by the federal reserve. For the current year we use the latest exchange rate from the same source.
