How does the Article Transfer Service work for reviewers?

Last updated on February 07, 2024

The Article Transfer Service (ATS) is an enhancement to the manuscript submission process. If an author submits to an Elsevier journal that uses ATS but the Editor determines that the manuscript might be a better fit with one of our other titles, the author may be invited to transfer their manuscript to one of those journals instead. If the author accepts this offer, their manuscript files will be transferred to new journal.

How does it work?

The author receives the transfer offer from Elsevier by email and can launch the transfer process by clicking on the link in the email message.

  • The ATS page appears, listing one or more recommended journals for the transfer.
  • The author selects one of the journals from the list and their manuscript – including your review comments – is automatically submitted to that journal for consideration.
  • Before launching the transfer process, the author may revise their paper based on reviews received from the initial journal.
  • After the transfer process has taken place, the author completes their submission in the new journal.
  • The author’s manuscript can now undergo the peer-review process in the new journal.

What does it mean for me as a reviewer?

While completing a review for a journal that uses ATS, your review comments will be transferred if the submission is offered a transfer and the author accepts it.
