Why is the new Web Importer failing to be upgraded on reinstall?

1. Ensure that you have reinstalled from hereopens in new tab/window.
2. Activate the new extension by clicking the red Mendeley logo in the top right of the browser.

If you are a long-time user, this behavior may differ from your customary invocation of Mendeley Web Importer through a bookmark called 'Save to Mendeley' or 'Add to Mendeley'; however, any bookmarks called 'Save to Mendeley' or 'Add to Mendeley' will not be updated by the reinstall process. Please delete such bookmarks.

About bookmarklets

Until 2018 the Mendeley Web Importer was supported as a bookmarklet (a bookmark which executes JavaScript when clicked to load a user interface window).

This executed the following:

However, since web browsers are increasingly locking down their security environment, Mendeley Web Importer requires permissions which can only be given to browser extensions rather than JavaScript executed on the page.

In order to focus resources on providing the best experience we can, since 2019 invoking versions of Mendeley Web Importer built from a bookmark has not been supported by the development team.

The development team has not removed the file to which the historical bookmarks point since a small amount of users with old and non-upgradable browsers continue to use this functionality. It will continue to be available but no guarantees about performance or operation are made. We request that all users upgrade to the supported and regularly maintained browser extension versions of Mendeley Web Importer.
