How do I work with Article in Press documents?
Last updated on March 25, 2026
Article in Press (AIP) documents have been accepted for publication but have not yet been assigned to a journal issue. Having access to Article in Press documents allows you to obtain critical and current information more quickly.
How
Follow these steps to view and search for Article in Press documents:
In Quick search and Expert search results, the ‘Article in Press’ designation displays directly above the database notation.
On the record page, an Article in Press document displays its 10-digit to 14-digit accession number in alphanumeric format, such as 2019987654 or 20040123456789.
When the Article in Press is replaced with the document's final version, the ‘Article in Press’ icon and designation disappear.
Note: From 2010 to September 3, 2014, Compendex Article in Press documents were assigned a temporary accession number, such as IP12345678, which was replaced by a new 14-digit accession number when the document was published in its final version. Thus, some older AIP records that were not replaced with a final published version display a temporary accession number.
As of September 4, 2014, Article in Press records were no longer assigned temporary accession numbers, but were assigned the same 14-digit accession number that is carried over to the final version of the record when it is published.
Refer to the table below for the three types of Articles in Press documents available in Engineering Village.

Accepted manuscripts | Accepted manuscripts are articles that have been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication by the Editorial Board. These articles have not yet been copy-edited and/or formatted in the journal house style. |
Uncorrected proofs | Uncorrected proofs have been copy-edited and formatted but have not been finalized and may still be corrected by the authors, so the text could change before final publication. |
Corrected proofs | Corrected proofs contain authors' corrections and may or may not have specific issue and page numbers assigned. |
