How do I find Open Access documents in Engineering Village?
Last updated on November 23, 2024
Open Access (OA) represents scholarly documents which are online and available without subscription restrictions. Open Access documents are only available from Compendex and Inspec and include the following classifications which meet these databases' quality content standards:
- Gold
- Hybrid gold
- Bronze
- Green
All Open Access documents are designated with the Open Access label near the title for the document wherever it is displayed (e.g., Results list, Record page, Selected records, Print, Email, Downloaded documents).
How
You may find Open Access documents via facet refinement using Quick or Expert search.
- Conduct a Quick or Expert search query. The Document results list displays on the page.
- From the ‘Open Access’ facet within the ‘Refine’ results pane, select one or more of the facet values listed in the chart below.
- Click ‘Limit to.’ The search query is updated to restrict the results to the Open Access types that you selected.
- If you would like to exclude one or more of the Open Access facet values from your search query, click ‘Exclude.’ The search results are refreshed to exclude the facet value(s) you selected.
Refer to the chart displayed below for the Open Access facet values and their definitions.
Note: It is possible for a document to contain more than one Open Access status because it can be available in different Open Access versions. Examples include documents which are ‘Gold’ and ‘Green’ or ‘Hybrid Gold’ and ‘Green.’

|---|---|
All Open Access | All Open Access documents |
Gold | Documents are contained in journals which publish only open access. |
Hybrid Gold | Documents are contained in journals which provide the authors the choice of publishing open access. |
Bronze | The manuscript accepted for publication or the published version of the record for which the publisher has chosen to provide temporary or permanent free access. Bronze status is assigned to a document if there is another publisher specific license other than a Creative Commons license or no license at all. |
Green | The manuscript accepted for publication or the final published version of the record available at a repository. |
How
You may find Open Access documents via Expert search.
- Enter your search query into the Expert search field box.
- Include the specific Open Access type (ACT) search field value(s) listed in the chart below to complete your search query.
- You may search for records with the specific ‘repositoryam’ or ‘repositoryvor’ values in an Expert search query. These more specific repository values are only available via Expert search and are not available from the ‘Open Access’ facet.
The following chart contains the ACT search field values for all the Open Access types that Engineering Village supports. Use these values to conduct specific Open Access queries via Expert search. Review the search examples for various types of Open Access search queries.
