How do I use the numeric filter?

Last updated on September 24, 2025

Compendex and Inspec records contain standardized numeric quantities and ranges. This normalized format of data improves numeric search functionality in Engineering Village.

The numeric filter allows you to easily build and refine your numeric searches from the Quick and Expert search result pages. You specify the numeric field, unit of measure, operator, and numeric value for each numeric search from a list of dropdown selections. The numeric filter converts the unit of measure that you choose to the scientific standard default unit so that you do not need to convert this information to build your search queries. Each dropdown box in the numeric filter displays information dependent upon your choice in the previous box.

How

Follow these steps to refine search results using the numeric filter:

  1. Run a Quick or Expert search.
  2. At the top left side of the ‘Refine’ pane, click the down arrow in the numeric filter (‘By physical property’) accordion section. The ‘By physical property’ section opens.
  3. From the first dropdown, select the physical property (e.g. ‘Percentage,’ ‘Volume,’ ‘Area,’ etc.) you want to search. The list will display only physical properties that are contained in your search results. Refer to the Numeric search fields chart for detailed information about the 62 fields available for this search.
  4. From the second dropdown, select the operator (equals, greater than, greater than or equal to, lesser than, lesser than or equal to, or between) that you want to search.
    • For all operators except ‘between,’ enter the numeric value in the ‘value’ box to the right of the operator dropdown.
    • For the ‘between’ operator, enter the numeric values for the range in the two boxes (‘from’ and ‘to’) located to the right of the ‘between’ operator.
  5. From the third unit dropdown, select the unit of measure you want to search (if it is different than the one that is showing by default for that physical property).

Note: All 62 numeric fields have one default unit of measure. However, some fields have several optional units of measure that can be used. The Numeric filter automatically calculates the optional units into the default unit for searching. This feature allows you to select a unit of measure without the need to convert it to the default unit of measure. For example, the default unit for the ‘Time’ field is ‘second.’ However, you do not need to convert your query to seconds to use the numeric filter. You may use any of the other selections (femtosecond, hour, microsecond, millisecond, minute, nanosecond, or picosecond) to run your query.

  6. Click ‘Refine.’ The Results list displays.

The numeric data appears in the ‘Numerical data indexing’ field of the ‘Indexing’ section of the record page.
