What are Related documents?
Last updated on March 18, 2026
The Related documents box contains links to documents that are related by a relevance algorithm to the Compendex or Inspec document that you are viewing. This box is displayed on the right side of the record page.
Note: The ‘Related documents’ feature is only available for current Compendex and Inspec databases, but not for Compendex backfile or Inspec archive databases.
How
- Run a Quick or Expert search. The Document results list opens.
- From the ‘By physical property’ section of the ‘Refine results’ section, apply a Numeric filter to your search query if desired.
- From the Document results list, click the document title to view the document. The record page view opens.
Using a relevance algorithm, the ‘Related documents’ box displays a maximum of six document types from the following list (e.g., Journals, Conferences, Articles in Press, Book Chapters, Standards, Dissertations, and Preprints).
Note: These three documents from each document type are extracted from all the databases (excluding backfiles) for which your institution is entitled (not just Compendex or Inspec).
Each related document contains the following information (as available):
- document title
- author(s)' names
- publication year
- source title name (publisher name for Standards documents)
- database name
How
- Select the document type for the related document you want to view. The top three documents display beneath the document type label.
- Click the document title to view the related document.
- Click the ‘View all’ link at the bottom of each document type section (e.g., ‘View all journals’), to see all documents from that document type that relate to the document you selected. An Expert search results page displays beneath the search query box.
