What are Standards?

Standards are published documents that establish specific requirements and are created to ensure the consistency and reliability of methods, services, and products.

Standards documents will be returned in your Compendex and Inspec databases search results along with all other types of documents.
You may limit your search queries to only Standards documents from both Quick and Expert search queries:
- From the Document results list after running a Quick search query, select the ‘Standard’ checkbox from the ‘Document type’ tab.
- From the Expert search form, enter the following search query: (ST WN DT)
Additionally, you can limit your search queries to specific Standards documents from both the Quick and Expert search forms:
Standard IDs can appear in many formats. Due to various types of punctuation available in Standard IDs, enclose the ID in double quotation marks or curly braces as shown in the examples below for best search results.
From the Quick search form, select the ‘Standard ID’ field from the ‘Search within’ field dropdown menu. This field is only available for Compendex documents.

From the Expert search form, use the STDID field to search for the Standard ID. This field is only available for Compendex documents.

From Refine results (left pane of the Document results list), select ‘Active’ or ‘Inactive’ from the ‘Status’ facet to filter your search to one of these statuses.
Note: The ‘Status’ facet is only available for Compendex records.
Refer to Refine Quick, Expert, and Thesaurus results for more information about using the facets to filter your results.
The Document results list citation for a Standards document displays the following information:
- Standard title
- Source information (source title, version number or page number, publication date)
- Number of versions (only available for Compendex standards)
- Status and qualifier information (e.g., Active - Approved; Active - Revision; Active - Definitive; Inactive - Withdrawn; Inactive - Historical, Revision, etc. This information is only available for Compendex standards)
- Database
- Document type: Standard (ST)
Note: The version number or page number may be unavailable for some standards.
From the Document results list, select the documents that you want to view by clicking the Standard title to view the record page.
Detailed information regarding the particular standard displays on the record page.
The number of versions for the Standard (if available) will display in a bubble to the right side of the ‘Versions’ label on the left side of the record page.
- Click the ‘Versions’ label on the left side of the page to go to the ‘Standard Versions’ section of the record page.
- Click ‘Search Versions’ to run a search for all versions of the Standard. The page refreshes, and a result list displays that details the hierarchy of all active and inactive versions for the Standard.
- Click a Standard title to view a Standard document. A record page opens.
Note: Versions are only available for Compendex records.
