Release Notes 2020-2021
Last updated on July 21, 2023
As part of our continuing effort to expand content sources for your research, we will soon begin to provide article preprints from MedRXiv and BioRXiv. The benefit to you is access to biomedical information at the earliest possible moment, including Randomized Controlled Trials (useful for systematic reviews), identifying Key Opinion Leaders via grey literature, and competitive intelligence.
We have introduced following features to help you prepare for the arrival of preprints.
Features
- Preprint filters within the results page
- Results filters on the left side of the page
- Publication type - Limit your record selection by using the new ‘Preprint’ option
- Journal title - Limit your record selection using two new journal options ‘medRxiv’ & ‘bioRxiv’
- Results filters below the search bar
- Sources – Option available to limit your results to preprints
- Publication type – Option available to limit your results to ‘Preprint’ publication type
- Preprint results display
- Results page - ‘PREPRINT’ label is added to help user identify the preprint records within the results page.
- Record details page – Preprint records can be recognized in the Abbreviated Journal Title, Source Type, Source of Indexing and Publication type fields in the additional information section within the record details page.
- Alerts
- Preprints will be included by default into the existing alerts, which means that users will receive preprints along with the other records for the previous saved email alerts. Hence users are provided 30 days from the release date to modify their preprint preference setting.
- Saved alerts - User can use ‘Edit preprint settings’ to modify bulk alerts to include or exclude preprints. Users have the option to select all to change preference of all the alerts at the same time.
- New alerts - While creating new alerts, users have an option to either exclude or include the preprints from their alerts. It will be checked by default.
The October 2021 release of Embase includes the following updates in the application:
Features
- Citation Information search framework
A new tab 'Citation Information' has been added to the Search tab. With this we have combine both 'Article' and 'Authors' in one module where both functionalities are present. You can now combine author name variations with citation information (article title, DOI, ISSN…).
Former 'Authors' functionality is not accessed clicking on 'Citation Information' and selecting 'Specify name variants' from the form.
This means that the 'Author' search on the top toolbar will be deleted and the current “Article” search will be changed to 'Citation Information'.
- Non-signed in users record export changes
As suggested by a few of our users we have lifted the restriction for non-signed in users to export documents on Embase.com.
Non-signed in users will be able to export as before with a limitation of 500 records per batch. 500 records are the maximum number of records than can be sent to the clipboard or viewed in the record details page at once.
- SAML user workflow changed for a faster and seamless user experience
User will be now sent to the landing page as an authorized non-signed in user directly after authenticating themselves in their organization via WAYFless URL or SAML. Before there was an extra screen asking for sign in or to 'Continue without personalization'.
- Same number of results when rerunning alerts
We fixed the issue where for some terms, rerunning the alert that contained them resulted in significantly less results.
Bugs and minor improvements
- Fixed a bug where scrolling in PICO page was not allowed after a certain point and was preventing users to write in the 'Study type' box.
- Fixed a bug where the State was missing in correspondence address field in all export format.
- Fixed a bug that prevented to delete more than 500 records from the clipboard or the saved clipboard.
- Fixed a bug where in the usage statistics the total number of searches was not the sum of the different search types.
- Fixed a bug where adding truncation resulted in less results. For example, cellphone and cellphone*.
- Fixed a bug where setting up a RSS feed was deleting the whole search history.
- Fixed a bug that prevented the record details page to be fully displayed in Internet Explorer 11
- Fixed a bug where there was an error in highlighting with terms that could contain a hyphen or a example between them. Application was highlighting both highlighting both terms per separate. For example: ‘type a’

Embase is pleased to announce the completion of the migration to Elsevier's new Identity Management System.
The new Identity Management System improves users’ sign in, registration, remote access experience, and enables Single Sign On access across Elsevier products. In addition, the new system allows users access enhanced personalized features and remote access outside institutional IP ranges.
The new Identity Management System provides the following benefits:
- A consistent, simpler user experience for signing in and creating an Elsevier Account, including improved integration with browser password managers
- Reliable Single Sign On eliminating the need for users to sign in again as they move between multiple Elsevier products and services
- A new, integrated flow for gaining remote access from anywhere via institutional (federated) login or institutional email confirmation
- All remote access methods available and working consistently across all products
- Full compatibility with mobile devices and apps
Several Elsevier products such as Mendeley and Scopus have already adopted Elsevier’s new Identity Management, and throughout 2020, we plan to update many of the other Elsevier products and services to bring all users of Elsevier solutions the same benefits.

Please note:
Sign in is mandatory in order to export from Embase.
Freedom of data export is one of the unique features of Embase. However, excessive numbers of concurrent export operations can impact the solution’s performance for all users. To ensure consistent and fast performance for everyone using the solution, we’ve made the decision of making exports available to only registered users.
- Registered users can export data from Embase without any limitation at a limit of 10000 records at a time.
- Anonymous users cannot export any data. They will be prompted to register and/or sign in.
The functionality of the export feature in the filters is kept intact and no sign in is required.
