Funding Bodies by linked publications page, part of the Overview subscription, offers a list of an Institution’s top 10 top-level Funding Bodies by the number of linked publications.
Linked Publications in SciVal are publications where we were able to establish a link to a Funder Organization in our taxonomy. In SciVal we refer to these Funder Organizations as Funding Bodies. The Funder Organizations linked to publications provided financial or non-financial support to conduct research, development or innovation work, and may include Institutions as well.
We establish the links based on two methods:
- Extracting the funding information from the acknowledgement text of a publication – made available by the authors together with the publication. The extracted data is further mapped to Funder Organizations available in our taxonomy or verified for a new addition.
- Collecting resulting publications’ identifiers directly from Funders’ sources or aggregator platforms.
Using both methods, the link between a publication and a Funder Organization can be established.
The coverage depends not only on our ability to extract the data and map to a Funder Organization, but foremost on whether the information is fully and correctly populated in the publications’ acknowledgement text. In recent years more Funders have encouraged Researchers to populate this information, resulting in better coverage. In addition, as of 2018 our extracting process was automated by introducing an NLP algorithm, allowing for better linking and so coverage.
Our Funder Organization taxonomy contains top-level stand-alone Funding Bodies and top-level parent Funding Bodies with organizational hierarchies - sub-Organizations or child Organizations. We offer 3-level hierarchy in SciVal. Publications linked to lower-level sub-Organizations (for example level 4 or 5) are aggregated to the 3rd level.
Publications can be linked to multiple Funding Bodies, including multiple sub-Organizations of the same top-level parent Funding Body. They are then aggregated and deduplicated on the top level.
