Why is a Registered User not found when searching for Reviewers in Editorial Manager?
Last updated on August 05, 2022
Sometimes when searching for a reviewer you know is registered in an Editorial Manager (EM) journal, they are not found in the search results. This either means they do not fit the parameters of the search, or they are specifically set to be unavailable as a reviewer.
How?
- Look at the 'from' option you chose, to the right of the search type:
- All reviewers will find any person with a reviewer role.
- Entire database will find any registered person with a reviewer role or not.
- Any specific reviewer role will find only people with that role.
- If you used the search types Search by Classification Matches or Search by Personal Classifications, you will never find any user who has no defined personal classifications.
- If you used Suggest Reviewer as the search type, the person might be excluded based on your settings in My Reviewer Suggestion Preferences (see suggest reviewer faq)
- Find the person via 'Search People' on the Editor Main Menu.
- Check the reviewer settings for the user in the top section of the record:
- Available as a Reviewer: if this is set to No, the person can never be found in a reviewer search. Users are able to update this option themselves, and may use it as a request not to be invited.
- Board Member: is not searchable in Search for Reviewers, but can be set as a sort option in reviewer search result. It can be displayed in some reviewer reports.
- Forbidden as a Reviewer: If this is set to Yes, the person can never be found in a reviewer search. This selection can only be viewed or updated by an editor.
- Reviewer Role: can be changed if incorrect, note this can only be updated while the user has no open invitations or assignments.
- Scroll to the bottom to check notes before making changes, especially if the person is set to 'Forbidden as a Reviewer'.
- If you mark a user as 'Forbidden', consider adding a note to explain why.
- Click 'Submit' to save if you have made changes.
If the person is not found in Search People then either they are not registered, or have been removed from the journal. See Inviting Unregistered Reviewers for EM.
