How do I uninvite Reviewers in Editorial Manager?
Last updated on February 23, 2023Editors with the appropriate permission can uninvite reviewers in Editorial Manager (EM), either before they respond to an invitation or after they agree. Reviewers may also be uninvited automatically some number of days after the invitation is sent, or unassigned automatically when they are some number of days overdue. See how can reviewers be automatically uninvited in EM.
How?
- Sign in to Editorial Manager for the journal where the manuscript is located.
- Navigate to the manuscript record via 'Search Submissions' or the 'Editor To-Do List'.
- Select 'Invite reviewers' under the 'Action' column to be directed to the 'Reviewer Selection Summary'. For more details on this screen see how can I view and manage pending reviews.
- Invited Reviewers are listed just below the search Types.
- You may wish to check for alternate reviewers before uninviting, so that you know if anyone will be automatically promoted. See How can I use alternate reviewers in EM.
- If a reviewer shows 'Partial Review saved' consider if you really want to un-assign now. If you do, the partial review will be deleted and cannot be recovered.
- Select the 'Un-invite' or 'Un-assign' button at the far right of the reviewer's name.
- In the popup that appears, select one of the buttons to send the default letter or a custom letter.
- If you choose Send Custom Letter, the usual screen appears to edit the letter.
- If you choose Send Default Letter, the configured default will be sent.
- The screen may briefly display a 'Processing' warning while the letter Is being sent, do not close the window or change to another screen while this is visible. It should take only a few seconds.
The actual function is the same, the difference is only in whether the reviewer had already agreed (or been assigned without invitation).
- When a reviewer has been invited and has not responded to agree or decline, they can be uninvited.
- After a reviewer has agreed, or if the reviewer wasassigned without invitation, they can be unassigned.
- Uninvite and Unassign statistics are tracked separately for each reviewer.
In order to manually uninvite reviewers in Editorial Manager, you need to:
- Be an editor assigned to that submission, or else to have permissions to view the assignments of other editors.
- Have permission to uninvite reviewers.
- The reviewer must be status Invited, or Assigned.
After completing these steps
- The chosen letter is sent to the reviewer and their invitation or assignment is closed.
- Assigned Editors may also be notified, if configured.
- If an valid Alternate Reviewer is listed they may be automatically invited, depending on the journal configuration. See How can I use alternate reviewers in EM.
