How can I use Decision Phrases in Editorial Manager?
Last updated on November 04, 2022Decision Phrases in Editorial Manager (EM) are a list of short phrases that editors can select to be included in decision letters. These phrases can provide a consistent voice when communicating editorial decisions in letters to Authors as well as saving time for Editors. Editors can quickly add journal-defined, regularly used comments directly into the Decision letter without having to type them each time.
Each combination of Article Type and Editor role can have a different Decision Form defined. Each Decision Form can have a different subset of the journal's Decision Phrases enabled for selection. Contact your Journal Manager or other support contact with any questions about your journal configuration.
How
- After selecting 'Submit Editor's Decision and Comments', locate the list of Editor Decision Phrases on the form, and tick one or more phrases to be added to the decision letter.
- For questions about which phrases are available, or to request changes, contact your Journal Manager or other support contact.
- If any previous editor has selected Decision Phrases, you may make changes to the selections before submitting your own decision.
- If you have selected more than one, you may wish to click Preview Selected Phrases to see how they look together.
- Select 'Close'' when done previewing.
- Continue to submit your decision as usual. See this FAQ for more details on completing the Decision Form.
- When drafting the Decision Letter, a list of the selected Decision Phrases will be inserted into the letter at a location defined in the Letter Template.
- Each selected phrase will appear on a new line.
- By default, Decision Phrases are inserted under the signature area of the Letter Template, along with the comments submitted by Editors and Reviewers. Journals may customize letter templates to place it in a different position.
- When editing the letter, these phrases can be edited, rearranged, etc.
Not all Editors are able to draft the decision letter after making a decision, see How do I draft and send an Author Decision Letter in Editorial Manager?
After adding Decision Phrases:
- If the decision workflow moves on to another editor, that editor can see the phrases you selected and may make changes to the selections.
- When the decision letter is sent the selected phrases will be a part of the letter.
