Why does Mendeley Cite say 'There are no citations in this document' even though there are?

Last updated on February 20, 2026

We are aware of users not being able to insert bibliographies and of citations not ordering correctly when using recent versions of Microsoft Office 365 desktop on Windows machines.

Microsoft have introduced an update to Office which stops Mendeley Cite being able to read citations once they are inserted into the document and will also cause superscript citation styles to repeatedly update with a 1. This also means that Mendeley Cite cannot recognize citations to generate a bibliography from.

Microsoft have since updated all supported versions of Word. If you are experiencing this issue, we recommend that you update your version of Word or Office to the latest release to resolve this issue.
