How do I use institutional (Shibboleth) credentials with Mendeley?
Last updated on June 02, 2025
You will only be able to sign in to Mendeley Desktop with an institutional (Shibboleth) credential using a connected Mendeley account. Refer to the following steps to connect your institutional (Shibboleth) credential to a new or existing Mendeley account in order to benefit from your institution’s Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) subscription.
If you already have a Mendeley or Elsevier account, you can connect it to your institutional (Shibboleth) credentials to benefit from your institution’s Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) subscription.
- Go to Mendeley.com and logout if you are signed in.
- Click the 'Sign In' link.
- Sign in with your institutional (Shibboleth) credentials.
- When prompted, type your existing Mendeley or Elsevier account email address and click 'Continue'.
- Enter your account password and choose 'Continue and connect'.
Once you have completed this sign in process, you should use your Mendeley account email address and password to sign in to Mendeley Desktop rather than your institutional (Shibboleth) credentials.
If you do not have an Mendeley or Elsevier account, you can create a new Mendeley account and connect it to your institutional (Shibboleth) credentials to benefit from your institution’s Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) subscription.
- Go to Mendeley.com
- Click the 'Sign In' link.
- Sign in with your institutional (Shibboleth) credentials.
- When asked, enter your preferred email address for your new Mendeley account and click 'Continue'.
- Complete the remaining registration information and click 'Register'.
Once you have completed this registration process, you should use your Mendeley account email address and password to sign in to Mendeley Desktop rather than your institutional (Shibboleth) credentials.
