How can I export my library?

Last updated on April 06, 2022

Mendeley provides the ability to export your library in one of three formats:

  • BibTeX (.bib)
  • RIS – Research Information Systems (.ris)
  • Endnote XML (.xml)

To export your library from Mendeley Desktop:

  1. Highlight the references you wish to export.
  2. Go to 'File' and click 'export'.
  3. Select the format you wish to export as and click 'save'. This will generate a file you can then save to your machine.

The export contains reference Metadata. PDFs are referenced, but not directly exported.

To export your library from Mendeley Reference Manager:

  1. Select the references you wish to export.
  2. Select the 'Export' option in the action panel.
  3. Select the format you wish to export as. This will generate a file that is saved to your machine.

Additionally in the Mendeley Reference Manager you have the option to export in Microsoft Word (.xml) format. The export contains reference Metadata. PDFs are referenced, but not directly exported.
