What types of images are available in Image Finder?

Last updated on December 18, 2025

Image Finder is a repository of all the images that have been loaded into the asset repository. It contains millions of images from thousands of books and journals so that you can find the best images to illustrate your work.

When compositors complete the production of books and journal issues, copies of the final assets (including images) are sent to a physical archive (on DVDs) known as the Global Book Archive and also uploaded to an asset repository that serves the Elsevier products such as ScienceDirect and ClinicalKey. Typically, the original, full resolution images are only sent to the archive.

Image Finder is designed to search through all the images that have been loaded into the asset repository, using the image caption and other metadata to find and present suitable images. When an image is found, users can submit a request for the high resolution version of the image if one is available. Requested images will be retrieved from the Global Book Archive and delivered to the requester using the requested delivery method.

Image Finder also enables specified users to curate collections of images that are independent of any book or journal. Images maintained in a collection may even be certified as "Rights free". So collections represent a good starting point for discovering images that can be reused without constraint or cost.
