How can I set up RSS feeds?
Last updated on November 23, 2024
Keep current with recently added content by creating alerts for the latest technical information and other news which meet your search criteria, without having to rerun these same searches repeatedly.
RSS is an acronym for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ or ‘Rich Site Summary’ and is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing content. Information released in RSS format is called a ‘feed,’ and an ‘RSS reader’ displays feeds from your selected sites without your needing to visit each website individually. You will receive the most current information whenever these sources are updated. Additionally, your RSS reader will allow you to share information with others in your research or study group.
Subscribe to an Engineering Village RSS ‘feed’ to receive the most recent updates for the information for which you are interested.
Detailed information regarding RSS readers and feeds is available on the RSS Specifications website.
How
Select a relevant section below to learn more about how to use RSS:
‘RSS readers’ (also known as ‘RSS aggregators’ or ‘News aggregators’) are programs designed to gather information from many different sources such as Engineering Village, various news outlets, and your library (if your library is providing an RSS feed), and display them to you in a single interface. Most RSS readers are available to download free from the Internet. You can choose among desktop computer readers, handheld device readers, or web-based options.
Engineering Village provides RSS feeds of your search queries. Once you have executed a search, post the latest updated documents to your RSS reader that match your query and share the results with others in your institution. The Engineering Village RSS feed includes titles of the documents and links back to Engineering Village for these documents.
Note: You must be in an IP-authenticated environment that has access to Engineering Village to view the document. You cannot view the document if you are accessing Engineering Village through a proxy environment.
- In Engineering Village, execute a Quick or Expert search and refine it until you have the search strategy you want to use as your feed.
- Click ‘RSS feed’ in the bar above the search results. The Engineering Village RSS Feed pop-up window opens with a URL that is created for your feed.
- Click ‘Copy.’ A message with a green check mark displays in the pop-up window that confirms this URL was copied to the clipboard. The button changes to ‘Copied’ with a green checkmark.
- Open your RSS reader.
- Copy and paste the URL from the clipboard into your RSS reader.
Each week when the Engineering Village databases are updated, any new results matching your query are delivered to your RSS reader.
Up to 400 titles are delivered with each update.
