How to retrieve COVID-19 related literature from Embase?

Last updated on September 01, 2020

With Emtree 2020.02v release we introduced COVID-19 vocabulary to index and retrieve Coronavirus related information in Embase records. The suggested queries for creating a disease or virus query, respectively, will be:

  • ‘coronavirus disease 2019/exp’
  • ‘severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2/exp’

Above terms are the official names for the disease and virus, respectively, as announced by WHO/ICTV. Since February 2020, Embase has been indexing Coronavirus related information using different related terms, which are now added as synonyms of these terms in the Emtree202.02v. After the Emtree release, we have replaced the indexed non-official labels with official ones as proposed by WHO/ICTV.

Before the Emtree 2020.02v release a candidate term was used.

As a result, in order to perform an extensive literature search, we recommended using the pre-defined syntax for formulating a virus and disease search, comprising of all synonymous terms. However, with the Emtree 2020.02v release we have simplified this and recommend using the above syntax for diseases or virus search, respectively.

Following are some possible strategies (using previously recommended full syntax before the Emtree 2020.02v) for extracting COVID-19 literature in Embase. Here we recommend filtering of the results further with the limits and triple links with which one can easily narrow down to the most relevant results:

  1. Using the terms related to coronavirus
  2. Using the terms related to disease caused by coronavirus infection
  3. Extracting the literature for use of traditional medicine in COVID-19 treatment
  4. Extracting the literature related to medical devices, diagnostic kits and their adverse effects in COVID-19 treatment
