How can I easily identify a drug?
Last updated on September 05, 2025
You can refine and filter your searches based on the following characteristics:
- Imprint/Marking
- Colors
- Shape
- Scoring
- Dosage Form
The more information you add, the more specific the search becomes and fewer results are displayed. However, if no results are found, you may want to remove some of the entered search criteria to broaden your results.
How
Follow these steps to easily identify a drug:
1. Click 'Drug Identifier' in the Resources section.
2. Fill out the fields in the drug identifier form. Select from the options below to find out more on each field and on how to use it:
- Imprint or Marking for Side 1: Enter the imprint from the first side of the oral solid (e.g., '93').
- Imprint or Marking for Side 2: Enter the information from the second side of the oral solid (e.g., '7295').
Please note:
- If you would like to search by manufacturer logo, type 'logo' in side 1 or side 2.
- You can add all or part of an imprint for each side.
- If the imprint/marking contains spaces, the spaces are ignored in the search.
- The time for the search varies as the program looks for all combinations of the characters with and without spaces (e.g., 729, 7 29, 72 9). It is best to enter all the letters or all the numbers if you are uncertain about the spacing.
- You can select up to three (3) unique colors from the drop-down list. For example, searching for 'blue' returns all results containing the color blue, while searching for 'blue' and 'yellow' returns all results containing the colors blue and yellow.
- Not selecting any colors (leave as 'optional' from the list) returns all color results for your search criteria.
- Select a shape from the drop-down list (e.g. 'oval').
- Not selecting any shape (leave as 'optional' from the list) returns all shape results for your search criteria.
- To find character shapes (e.g., Scooby-Doo chewable vitamins), select 'Other.'
Scoring refers to the value assigned to an oral, solid dosage form as determined by the scoring indicated in the product's labeling.
Select a value from the drop-down list:
- ‘All’ (default value): Returns both scored and un-scored results for your search criteria.
- ‘Scored’: Returns only those oral, solid dosage forms with scoring (the drug item has one or more score lines)
- ‘Unscored’: Returns only those oral, solid dosage forms that are un-scored, or for which scoring is not applicable.
Dosage Form refers to the value associated to an oral, solid item.
Select a value from the drop-down list:
- 'Both'; (default value): Returns both tablet and capsule results for your search criteria.
- 'Tablets':Returns only those oral, solid tablet dosage forms.
- 'Capsules':Returns only those oral, solid capsule dosage forms.
- Click 'Submit'.
- Your search results will then be displayed, under your Drug Identifier search filters.
- From the 'Search Results' you can do the following:
- Select a product to view more details. The 'How Supplied' section of the Drug Monograph displays.
- View a short description of the oral solid (e.g. white, oval-shaped).
- Roll your cursor over the image on the right to see a picture of the oral solid (if available).
- View products that are no longer on the market (off market displays in red).
- To search for another unknown tablet or capsule, enter new criteria into the Drug Identifier screen.
