What are JEL codes?

Last updated on February 28, 2022

JEL stands for the Journal of Economic Literature classification code. It is a system for classifying academic research articles in economics. JEL codes categorize articles into broad areas of research, such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, international economics, and so on. The JEL Code section in the new submission form is completely optional and does not impact distribution. The codes are an additional way to browse the site: Browse JEL Classification Codes on SSRN.

You can view SSRN papers that have been classified using JEL Codes by clicking the link for each code.

The JEL section is displayed publicly under the Keywords section on the public abstract page for the paper.

To enter JEL Codes in your submission:

  • Select a Social Science classification
  • Enter the JEL Code into the JEL Code field
  • Hit ‘Enter’ after entering each code.
