What are the technical requirements for Scopus?
Last updated on August 15, 2024
The requirements for the best performance include using the optimal browser with up-to-date browser versions that are properly configured.
Recommended browsers:
- Google Chrome (last 3 versions)
- Mozilla Firefox (last 3 versions)
- Apple Safari (last 2 versions)
- Microsoft Edge (last 2 versions)
Required browser settings:
- JavaScript must be enabled
- Cookies must be enabled
Scopus encourages the use of Chrome or Firefox for the most optimal performance and recommends that you use the most recent version of your desired browser. Scopus does not support beta or test versions of any browser.
To protect the data you send to Scopus, Scopus can be accessed through a secure server (https://www.scopus.com). This is a server that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology.
When you sign in to Scopus through this secure server, all of your Scopus transactions are secure until you end your personal session.
One exception to this rule is if you manually enter an http address in your browser during a session that you started with https. In that case, Scopus returns you to the secure server as soon as possible, but some of your transactions may not be secure.
Scopus recommends that you update your current Scopus bookmarks before using the secure server by changing the http in the web address to https.
With some browsers, you might receive a message that the page you are trying to access contains secure and non-secure items. This means that some of the items on the page do not reside on a secure server. For example, if an image on a page is located on your library, institution, or other non-secure website, you will receive a secure/non-secure item message. You must choose to show or not show the non-secure items before proceeding.
If you receive error messages and are unable to access the Scopus secure server, contact your librarian, administrator, or internet service provider for assistance.
Settings that can cause access problems:
- If SSL is not enabled on your browser, you will receive an error message when you try to access Scopus through a secured server.
- If SSL is not enabled across your network (due to firewall or proxy configurations, for example), you will not be able to access Scopus through a secured server.
If you access documents outside of Scopus during your secure Scopus session, when you return, you might not be on the Scopus secured server.
If you are using EZproxy to access Scopus and are experiencing sign in issues:
- Scopus recommends adding a set of Elsevier and product domains to your trusted site list to ensure proper access
- Make sure to use the EZproxy url from your institution
- Refer to How do I set up a proxy server to access subscribed products? for more information about configuring proxy servers.
The Scopus interface is available in multiple languages. Click your desired language at the bottom or any Scopus page.
