How do I filter and refine my search results?
Last updated on August 15, 2024
Once you have run a search, you have various options to refine, and filter your results.
Using the Refine pane, you can limit your results list to certain categories of documents by selecting the checkboxes next to these categories and selecting 'Limit to' or 'Exclude'.
This helps you narrow the list to the most relevant results.
Note: for expansive complex queries, there is an implicit limit of up to 50 exclusion/inclusion/boolean clauses per query. In general we recommend having no more than 50 boolean operators per query for optimal performance and results.
You can refine your results in the following ways:
- Year - Select to view the number of documents published for a year, including the first 20 results.
- Author Name - Select to view author details information. Select an author name to open the author details page, view the work of the author on the Analyze author output page, and open a results listing for the number of documents the author has published.
- Subject Area - Select to view a list of documents published in a selected subject area.
- Document Type - Select to view a list of documents published as selected document type.
- Source Title - Select to view source title information, such as source details, CiteScore, SJR, and SNIP information, plus access to a document result listing for the source.
- Keyword - Select to view a list of documents based on available keywords.
- Affiliation - Select to view affiliation details.
- Country / Territory - Select to view country details.
- Source Type - Select to view a list of documents based on a selected source type.
- Language - Select to view a list of documents based on a selected language.
The Refine Results box displays numbers that reflect the quantity of results for a particular category. When you select the number, a preview box appears to the right of the number.
Use the following features of the preview box to help you decide in advance whether to include the results in your refined search.
|
|
|---|---|
Scroll through the list of documents | If a scrollbar appears at right, use it to scroll up and down the results. The preview box displays a maximum of the 20 newest search results, even when the number in the Refine results box is higher than 20. |
Open a details page | Select a link to open various details pages:
Note: When previewing an author name, select 'View in Analyze author output' to open the Analyze author output window. |
View the [n] most relevant documents in a new window | Select the number of documents that match your search (near the top of the preview box) to view the documents in a Document results window. The preview box displays a maximum of the 20 newest search results, even when the number in the Refine Results box is higher than 20. |
Limit your results to the number shown or exclude results | Select 'Limit your results to these [n] documents only' to refine your results to only the documents listed in the preview box. Select 'Exclude these [n] documents from your results' to refine your results by excluding the documents listed in the preview box. |
View the sources' value in Journal Analyzer | Select the number of results in a Source Title category of Refine results. The box includes an additional link. Select 'Compare with other sources...' to see how each result compares with other sources in the Journal Analyzer. Hover your cursor over the green information icons for explanations of SJR and SNIP. |
Close the preview box | Select the 'Close' button to close the preview box and proceed with other steps to refine your results. |
- Once you select ‘View more’ several times, the display may stretch across the page and a new ‘Sort on # of results’ list appears. Select the drop-down and select a letter of the alphabet on which to do further sorting. Then select the ‘Limit to’ or ‘Exclude’ button.
- When you select ‘View more’ in the Source Title category, the link ‘Analyze source titles’ appears. Select one or more source titles, and select ‘Analyze source titles’ to open the Source title tab of the Analyze results page.

Notes:
- Select a number in parentheses to open the preview box of the corresponding results.
- When you limit by subject area, the Multidisciplinary subject is included.
