The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is an initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, for ranking higher education institutions in India across various categories and disciplines. Launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in September 2015, approximately 6,000 institutions participate annually.
The rankings are based on five key parameters:
- Teaching, Learning & Resources
- Research and Professional Practices
- Graduation Outcomes
- Outreach and Inclusivity
- Perception
The NIRF subject classification is mapped to selection of Scopus ASJC (All Science Journal Classification) codes, and it covers 8 key subject areas of focus. This means that when selecting the NIRF classification, the total number of publciations for an entity will likely be lower than when looking at all ASJCs.
