- Select Advanced from the Search drop-down menu. (Note: You do not have to fill in all of the search boxes).
- Enter all the terms you want to find in the first search box. The terms will be searched as a Proximity search using the NEAR operator. This search field does not search for synonyms. The following wildcards can be used: * to add zero or more additional characters; ? to add one additional character.
- Use the up and down arrows to specify how close the words (in the first search box) should be to one another. The maximum distance is 200 words.
- Enter several search terms that you want to retrieve in the second search box. Use double-quotes when you want to retrieve exact terms. Wildcards can be used in this field (see above). Check Include synonyms if you would like the search to include synonyms.
- Enter several search terms that you do not want to retrieve in the third search box. Use double-quotes when you want to eliminate exact terms. Wildcards can be used in this field (see above). Check Include synonyms if you want to also eliminate synonyms for those terms from the search.
